SAUNDERS & SHEW

    Carl Saunders and Bobby Shew are two of the world’s best jazz trumpet players. These guy’s history together goes back about fourty-five years. They played in almost every band in Las Vegas together and with Buddy Rich. As Bobby says, they have been “thick as thieves since around 1961”.

    In 2003, Carl performed a series of gigs with two trumpets, piano and bass. Carl doubled on drums. On this particular night the trumpets were Carl and Bobby, with each of them taking turns on the drums.

     I caught this action from my dinner table in the front row on a broadcast quality camera with a high quality stereo microphone. This intimate performance captures tunes from the evening, and the humor and banter of the announcements.
